which Graphic card? and ATI Problems

Hello.
Which graphic card would you suggest for gaming under SuSE Linux 8.2 and
Windows XP? Is the Radeon 9000 a good choice?
What alternatives to ATI do I have? I had several issues with ATI lately
so I might switch:
In my Linux PC I had the Radeon 9700 Pro since January. Now for SuSE 8.3
I was expecting the 3D drivers but unfortunately the card got damaged.
The card I got now from guaranty is a Radeon 9800. This means that I
have to wait another 9 months for running 3D drivers under Linux. The
linux drivers from ATI website don't run
Additionally I switched the original NVIDIA GeForce2 MX in my Power Mac
to an ATI Radeon 8500: Nearly half of my games don't run anymore:
TombRaider TLR, 4x4 Evolution 1 and 2 and this is actually the point for
switching.
The only way not to loose too much money is to put the Radeon 9800 out
of my PC and put it elsewhere, reactivating it when I have 3D drivers.
In the meanwhile I would like to have a cheaper card, good enough for
playing, maybe with a connector for a secondary monitor.
What about NVIDIA?
The SuSE Hardware compatibility database lists only a few with full 3D
support: Are there any good and recent cards in the list?
