using ldap for authentication across a network

reading about nis and ldap in the manual has made my mind up to use ldap to
authenticate my users across my small network because it can also be used by
the winblows clients.

ignoring the client side for now (as they will added later) and the nfs
issue (which can also be resolved later on the client side) is there
anywhere online that I can use as a guide for setting up my server to use
ldap for user/group stuff

I know bugger all about ldap so a beginners guide would be nice
