Thought I would follow up with some more interesting tidbits.

I connected the original IDE drive (master on IDE channel 1 from my original
post) which has a working Linux installation on it from my 'old' host that
this new one is replacing. It's connected as master on IDE channel 1, just
like on my old host. Disconnected *ALL* IDE devices from my new host
except this disk drive, fired up the power, and behold grub takes over and
we try to boot. Partition check goes OK, all devices are recognized,
but ....

... when trying to mount the root filesystem I get a panic yet again. This
time it says "unable to open an initial console" and to try passing init=
to the kernel. Googled on that one and tried a few things (like init=
linuxrc) but nothing worked out. So the problem appears to be something
centered around when my system tries to mount filesystems from any of my
devices. I'm not sure if the installation program on Suse tries to mount
anything from the hard drive or if it tries to mount a virtual filesystem
from the CD during the install, but in any event any time a mount command
is attempted I get hosed.

On the drive I used here, / and /boot are on different partitions if that
matters.

Hopefully this toggles something in someone out there in internet-land.

Again, thanks in advance for any pointers.

-Chris
