Intel 810 w/ SuSE 9.0: 3D but no 3D

After having upgraded to SuSE 9.0 and XFree 4.3.0 (fresh install, was using
8.0 before) I was hoping to finally get 3D support on my Intel 830
motherboard AGP graphics card to work. Now I was looking through all the
resources available to me and right now 3D actually seems to be installed
and configured properly (SaX2 shows 3D enabled, 3Ddiag see below), but most
programs that I want to make use of it (games like armagetron in
particular) don't seem to recognize it and I am at a loss to explain why.

When I try to run the 3D games, I get the "3D hardware support not
available" warning caused by the "CheckHardware --3D" command that SuSE
puts in the menu items. For some programs - GL Chess for example - 3D works
just fine nevertheless. Most other 3D programs like armagetron however fall
back to software rendering, even if I call them directly (not from the
menu). As a sidenote armagetron was running with 3D ONCE I believe when I
had set my system resolution to 1024x768 down from 1280x1024 which is my
standard resolution, but I wasn't able to reproduce it.

I have attached 3Ddiag, 3dinfo and lsmod output, which all seems to be fine.
In particular the AGP GART module is running. All mesa packages are
installed as well. Does anybody have an idea what else to check? Thanks a
bunch.
