I'm a Unix/Linux person and I've been advocating that for years.
If the application writters were compelled (out of sheer greed, if anything
else), to port Office, etc. to other OSes, then the OS group would be
forced to compete on the basis of quality rather than application-lockin.
In fact, MOST of the Unix comunity believes that the computing market
would be better served if MS was broken up into three divisions
(an OS division, a commercial/productivity apps division, and a
games division).
