Yes, variety could be a good thing, but this is again subjective. From my
experience, when using programs (or a window manager maybe, an interface to
the OS) that behave in different ways in relation to what you are used to is
not productive. You have to learn all the stuff not from the beginning, but
there is a learning time period. Of course, variety should exist again for the
same reason you say, for people that like to choose from different styles and
behaviours.
I think both KDE and GNOME have worked positively in that way.
