NIC causing routing problem for modem on Thinkpad.

I have Suse 9.0 Pro on a Thinkpad 390x. It has a built in LT modem which
is working great. I also have a Xircom pcmcia network card, which also
works great. Here is the problem, I can't get anywhere on the Internet
with the modem if the NIC is in the machine. I can dial up and connect,
but "Check Connection" shows that my dialup connection is trying to route
through the NIC, and there is no DNS server. Pings tell me that the
static IP address of the NIC is stating that my ping destinations can't be
found. If I remove the default gateway setting of the NIC, "Check
Connection" will then show that the modem connection is trying to route
through the modem, but no DNS server is available. Regardless of any
changes, when I have the modem connection active, popping out the NIC will
suddenly cause the DNS server to appear and I can ping and browse sites.
While STILL connected, plugging the NIC back in will cause DNS to
disappear, and popping it back out will cause it to magically reappear and
start working again. Currently I am sliding the NIC in at the office and
popping it out at home for dialup, but I would like to leave the NIC in
the machine always. Googling and Usenet haven't turned up any solutions
after several nights of searching, although I have discovered many other
things of great interest in this quest. Are people with modems and NICs
both built into their laptops having this problem? If so, it must be the
best kept secret on the Internet. Although I suspect that this is one of
those things that only I am lucky enough to have happen. Any help,
solutions, or points would be appreciated. Having my modem and NIC in the
laptop at the same time is the only Windows "feature" that I really miss
other than Spider Solitare.

Thanks,
James
