I am seeing the same problem with the latest nvidia (5328) run file. I
happen to be running an athlon system (2600). I have tried absolutly
everything and noticed a few glitches with suse 9.0

I point out the athlon because I have a Pentium system at work that is
working fine running the latest nvidia run file with 3D and all, but the
vid card is a nvidia geforce 2.

My geforce mx 440 se card seems to fail only the first time I start X
on this system. This did not happen with red hat 9.0 and a slightly
earlier version of the nvidia runfile (4496). I tried to install 4496 on
suse 9.0 but can't find pre-compiled kernel module and won't successfully
compile a new one (missing modversions.h). I have tried everything
published in this newsgroup to date on this system.

I was able to install the latest 5328 and I can get the nvidia splash
screen to appear, but the 3d acceleration is not available nor can I
enable it with sax2. Switch to text mode (Ctrl-Alt-F2) is disastrous! I
shows me very rough and giant text. Unusable of course.

I am getting the same first time failure of the display when running X if
I use the suse stock driver for nvidia which is referred to as "nv". To
work around it I must Ctrl-Alt-Bksp to kill it only the first time after
boot. This is strange. I have tried all sorts of combinations of settings
to try to make it come up with a decent diaplay after the first boot but
it only shows garbage on the screen until I kill it and bring it (X) back
up again. Then everything looks good.

I think suse and the nvidia developers need to spend a little more time
with Athlon systems. I have had a beast of a time with this system. I do
like the suse 9.0 but there are a few rough spots like this one. Hopfeully
there will be a new nvidia runfile and point release from suse soon to
address these issues, then I can get back to a fully functional 3D
accelerated system.

I have spent 6-8 hours on this problem and keep running into dead ends. I
really do not believe it works with geforce 4 and Athlon for now. The
Pentium and geforce 2 combo do appear to work very well.
