mysql permission settings question

Note: I'm a mysql newbie.

I've installed mysql on Suse 9.0 using Yast. After the install, I was
getting permission errors when I tried to run mysql_install_db. So I
changed the permissions on /var/lib/mysql and /usr/share/mysql (and all of
their contents) so that everyone has full access to those directories. I
know that it's not secure but I just wanted to get the server to run.

After giving everyone full access to those directories, mysql_install_db and
mysqld_safe ran correctly, the mysql server starts, and I can run
phpmyadmin.

Now, of course, I want to secure the server and databases again but I have
no idea what the best settings for those directories/files/subdirectories
should be.

Also, when I run mysqld_safe -u mysql at the shell prompt, the server starts
but the linux: prompt doesn't come back. There is just a blank line that I
can type on but nothing that I type has an effect. What should I do at this
blank line?

Any help with this stuff will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
