We can connect from WinXP internally to the VPN server, but not
externally. We have opened all ports on the firewall, but it still
won't connect.

Perhaps we've failed to open a port somewhere? What ports are necessary
  for WinXP connection?

Port 1723 tcp / udp for the pptp

anything else? The logs indicate the failure occurs during the MSCHAP
authentication. The server sends to the remote client several times
without a response then eventually hangs up. I can provide logs if
necessary. Perhaps there is another port I need open? Please help.
Thanks!!

Russ
