Yes, when you are uncertain of the commands that becomes a real
problem. But you can ease your own mind with very little effort: when
one of us tells you to execute a command like:

   fdisk -l /dev/hdx

you don't need to take it on blind trust. Do the following:

   man fdisk

and the manpage will tell you about the command and all the parameters
you were asked to enter. Not only does that help allay your fears, it
will also help you to learn more commands! :-)

If you have a hard time with manpages, try installing "pinfo" from
the CDs and then do:

   pinfo fdisk

instead of the "man" command. Even though it's still fairly dry
reading, it's a little easier to jump around in the info files and
pinfo makes it a little easier to navigate than plain "info", which
only emacs fanatics could love! (I'm sorta an emacs fan, but *way*
far away from being an expert in it!)
