Hello everyone. I really need your help. I posted a message here a
couple of weeks ago and didn't have time to address the offered
suggestions until now. Following is what happened after I tried the
popular suggestion:
Oh, and here is some info on my PC:
Compaq 2100z series notebook
Some kind of Radeon AGP graphics chip
Athlon XP 2000+
512 MB ram
"I tried using the configurator, like you said and it
did produce an error. Following is the error message:
"Monitor (0) with ID: HSD1508 not found."
I accepted that message and tried to set it up manually. Well, this
is a laptop and the monitor that is affixed doesn't have a model
number, so using the manufacturer pane to select the model didn't
apply. Only other setting was frequency, and I changed all the
defaults to 60 mhz, as it is in Windows.
I looked at what was in the graphics card info. I don't know that it
has the correct graphics card selected. It has ATI, which is correct,
but when in Windows and examining the details, I have "Radeon IGP
320M" and then "V1 AGP" (on a below line in advanced monitor settings
- Windows).
So, SuSE seemingly cannot identify my monitor. Also, it doesn't seem
to have the correct graphics card identified.
I don't know how to solve these problems. Will you help me?
I would be very grateful.
Brad."
FOLLOWING IS THE PROBLEM AS INITIALLY DESCRIBED:
Forgive me, I am just learning Linux. I have SuSE Linux Pro 9.0 and
all of the updates, I believe. I installed it with the DVD, side one
(never prompted for side two and instead prompted me to download all
the updates).
Anyhow, I got it installed on my Presario laptop alongside W2K, but
I'm having a real problem getting it functional. I appreciate your
patience and help with a novice like me.
Right now, the screen resolution (apparently default) is set at
640x4xx (something like that - THE LOWEST POSSIBLE RESOLUTION IN ANY
CASE).
I want it at 800x600 or 1024x768. I don't see how the system will be
worth using without those settings.
THE REAL PROBLEM is that when I try to reset the resolution settings,
I can do it at 800x600. But when it comes up, things are out of
place, the mouse pointer is screwed up; basically, the whole interface
looks like it's gone haywire. The screen is split with things
overlapping over to the other side (on default resolution, icons on
left side; at 800x600, some icons on left side, others on right side -
really screwed up).
This is REALLY frustrating.
I would be very grateful to somebody who would help me out here. I
tried tinkering with some settings in the various menus, but unless
it's at this puny resolution, nothing appears normal and the system is
really only function at this very low resolution. When opening a
webpage, I have to scroll 50% to get to the other side of the page.
It's ridiculous.
Oh, the drivers seem to be functioning for everything in Windows, so
this is clearly a Linux problem.
Thank you VERY MUCH for helping.
Brad.
