observations.
1. In your case I would have just put linux on the box since it was a used
machine bought mainly to learn linux. I have SuSE on my dual boot at home
and never even boot to Win anymore. If you have a Win box already (though
you hadn't said so) I would have just committed this box to linux. Also I
would not have installed 7.x on it. Given what's out there now with SuSE 9 I
would never go back to 7x

2. Linux' learning curve is the same as any other 'different' thing to try.
Personally I insist on learning something new every day - the day I stop
learning they'll be shoveling dirt on my coffin. I liked the differences in
linux (coming from a MS network admin background). Even in the console
(konsole?) the differences were refreshing.

3. You're right - buy a book - go to the library - ask questions in
newsgroups. (Although I've found this particular NG selectively responds to
those of us forced to us Outlook Express. It's a filter against trolls I
guess - when I post from Knode at home I *always* get an answer to a
legitimate question)

Hope all goes well
Tim
