It sounds as though your system did not freeze if you are able to switch
between consoles (Ctrl+Alt+F1, etc.). I am guessing that your GUI (KDE
GNOME, etc.) or XFree86 is what actually froze. To recover from that
freeze without needing to reboot, all you have to do is press Ctrl+Al
+Backspace. This should reset your XFree86 desktop. HTH!
