Modem Volume

I am using SuSE 9.0 and kppp to connect to the internet.
I can not turn off the volume on my modem.
I have tried all the optons in the kppp setup box under modem and commands
but none of them work. I have even entered the no volume code from the
modem manufacturer. Is there a configuration file that I can hand edit to
solve the problem?
