Rebooting hasn't helped me. I have been able to reproduce the problem,
though. When Evolution quit responding, I tried to kill it, but was
unsuccessful. Nor would KDE let me exit gracefully (panel and all
disappeared. Yeah, learn my terminal commands)so I did a manual power
down.
I reproduced this inability to login with the correct password in this
way: I wanted to install the nvidia drivers. I typed in init 3 at a
terminal window. It had the desired effect of killing KDE and the Xserver,
dumping me to a console. It also created the unable to login problem.
So, it seems to be related to an improper shutdown of either KDE or the
Xserver. Any brilliant ideas about what is going on here? Libranet never
did that, but I was using Icewm then, too.
