OK. It will be a chalange. :)

Whatever you prefer. I would prefer to put as much as possible on the
server. The main weakness will be the speed of the drive and the speed
of the network. Put cache for browsers localy.

SuSE has LDAP and NIS. LDAp is like Microsoft ADS.
From the manual that comes with SUSE 9.0 pro. Page 336, LDAP, A
directory Service.

In the ideal case, a central server keeps the data in a directory and
distributtes it to all clients using a certain protocol. The data is
structured in a way that a wide range of applications can access them.
That way, it is not necessary for every single calander tool abd e-mail
client to keep its own database [...]

It also gives explanation on how to do this. Do a search on google for
'ldap' and find a bunch of further info.
http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/LDAP-HOWTO/ and http://www.openldap.org/ are
good points to start.

This way when a student or teacher or whoever logs on, they will see no
difference between the different PC's. (if you have the bandwith, they
could even log on from home or China or wherever)

I would also work with nfs. This makes a PC, like the server, as if it were a
local drive.

There will be other ways to do things. You could also make the PC's
diskless worksations. Other people have again other ideas, probably.
