Hello all -- I'm currently trying SuSE following several years with
RedHat and
a whirlwind tour through Mandrake, Fedora, WBEL, and debian while
searching for stable and modern alternatives in just this past week.
If things proceed the
way they appear to be going at the moment, I'm here to stay for the
forseeable future.
I'm hoping somebody with more SuSE experience can help me make sense
of this.
My sound system is a bit bizarre at the moment. My sound card is
on-board a Shuttle AK37 motherboard--a shuttle VT8233/8235 AC97 Audio
Controller. The driver(s) being applied are snd-via686 and
snd-via8233. Through the Control Center...Sound System I have Start
aRts soundserver on KDE startup selected together with the other
defaults, and autodetect for sound I/O and quality.
Sound works with some things, but not others (all run as root):
*Sound Test: very dramatic, in stereo, works
*realplayer downloaded from realaudio website: "cannot open the audio
device. Another Application may be using it" (even when there is no
other application using it, and even after setting
preferences/performance to Esound)
*xmcd playing audio CD drive: application starts, recognizes CD
through CDDB,
but gives system error bell when trying to play
* KsCD: not opening at the moment, but when it did, played only left
channel
* CD Player: plays CD only on left channel
* Mplayer (via gmplayer): plays mp3 from hard drive, both channels,
even though Error! window is thrown saying "audio_setup: Can't open
audio device /dev/dsp: No such device" -- however ls -l /dev/ | grep
dsp indicates
ls -l /dev/ | grep dsp
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 5 Mar 12 17:46 adsp -> adsp0
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 12 Oct 2 16:45 adsp0
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 28 Oct 2 16:45 adsp1
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 44 Oct 2 16:45 adsp2
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 60 Oct 2 16:45 adsp3
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4 Mar 12 17:46 dsp -> dsp0
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 3 Oct 2 16:45 dsp0
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 19 Oct 2 16:45 dsp1
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 35 Oct 2 16:45 dsp2
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 51 Oct 2 16:45 dsp3
crw-rw---- 1 root root 55, 0 Oct 2 16:45 dsp56k
Does this make sense to anybody? Is there an obvious solution for
getting all audio applications working properly?
Thanks so much for your thoughts!
