SATA DMA support is problematic with kernels < 2.6.x - I got just the same
result with SuSE 9.0 out the box on a Maxtor drive and the M/B Si3112 SATA
chipset. I think some distros backport support, but apparently not SuSE
(well not yet, anyway) - if you check your logfiles you'll see warning
messages that DMA is disabled. There's usually a good reason for this! ;)
Note that this SATA issue isn't specific to SuSE; it's specific to the
Linux kernel and what information the developers are able to drag out of
chipset manufacturers.
The unofficial SuSE 2.6.1 kernel still didn't support it, but things
finally caught up with 2.6.3 which supports it just fine.

For SATA, wait until it's fuly supported - in SuSE 9.1 I assume, or have
some *real* tweaking fun and install 2.6.x yourself!
