here's where I am now:

I logged in as root and deleted the user that was giving me the
problems after copying all the files over to my /root directory. I
recreated the user and one by one copied files back to its /home
directory. I was able to log in but on subsequent logins I was back
to the problem I was having.

I then created a different user and copied all the files over. So far
I have been able to log in everytime with this new user, however, I
am now having the problem with root. I am able to su to root after
logging in as the regular user.

I really am lost on this. The only thing I can think of is a rootkit
has been placed on my system. I don't know why it wouldn't allow me
to log in as root from the login screen but allow me to su to root
after logging in as a regular user though.

Any insights would be greatly appreciated.
