Besides, it's a kernel issue and not a distro version issue.
The default kernel "supports" this chip in that you can read/write a
SATA disk just fine, but with no DMA.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
That's how come you got SATA DMA support, while those of us with the
SuSE-supplied 2.4.20 kernel don't.
