SuSE 9.0 does not connect to HP Intel 537 modem

I just installed SuSE 9.0 on a Compaq Presario 2598US laptop, but it
now does not connect via dial-up to the Net. The modem is recognized
as a HP Intel 537 model, which I assigned to the device file
"/dev/modem" during installation. However, the dial-up does not occur
via KInternet. There is no dial-up activity at all (no sounds of
dialing).

One problem (probably THE problem) is that the device file that is
used to configure the modem, "/dev/modem", is not listed in the /dev
directory!!! The only device file that SuSE 9.0 offered for
configuration of the modem during installation was "/dev/modem", other
than a few serial and USB ports.

I'm stuck. I can't figure out how to get SuSE to connect properly to
the modem. I can't understand why there is no /dev/modem device file
listed, when it is apparently the only device acceptable for the
modem.

Can anyone suggest something to fix this?
