Lets start off here with the understanding that I DON'T CARE if you use
SuSE, or even if you choose to use winblows, exclusively!!!!!

Now then, that off my chest, what we have is a failure to understand
partitions and partitioning, and how different OSs treat and use
partitions.

I would suggest that if you CHOOSE to use GNU/Linux, of ANY distribution,
that you thoroughly research and ensure that you understand HOW each
operating system creates, uses and manages the different partition types
which it can understand.

Here's my issue with this post:

"They say........."
"They say............."

I don't CARE what anyone says or do not say!!

What GRUB error.....? with specificity!

"I did a system upgrade......." What system upgrade? WHAT did you
upgrade.......from what to what?

"Downloaded a bunch of patches......WHAT was downloaded, and for what
purpose?

Winblows boot manager.....NOW we're getting someplace.......

"Another system update.....What was updated......?

"Is this just a problem with SuSE, or will have the same thing if I switched
to Mandrake, Debian or Fedora?"

Regarding this last question, I can't tell you, because I don't use those
other Distributions, BUT I can conjecture that until you're certain you're
understanding what is happening here with your system, that yes, you will
continue to have difficulties.
