problems with software package during ftp installation

After a lot of trying out I finally managed to get the ftp installation
to work but there seems to be a software problem. I cannot load a
software package therefore the installation can't go on further.

And another newbie question. Are there any risks when installing Linux
parallel to Windows XP? I would like to use both and have Linux on my C:
drive and Windows on my D: drive. When installing, Linux makes new
partitions or something. Now I am wondering if I would loose any Windows
  programs or whatever is on D:.
Hope someone can help me!
