That's too late - as Leen pointed out you need to enter it onto the
boot
menu and since you're logged in, you've already gone past that.

Try this, to make sure your boot menu stays there long enough for you
to
see it:

Logon as root, but there's no need to do 'startx'
Edit the file /boot/grub/menu.1st
Near the top you should see the line: timeout nn
where 'nn' is some number. Change the number to 30 and save the file.

If you're running lilo, then edit the file /etc/lilo.conf
Near the top is the line timeout=nn so again, change the number to 30
With lilo you'll need to enter "lilo" (less quotes) once you've made
the
changes.

(you'll only need to edit one of these files - you'll either be
running
grub OR lilo)

Now shutdown & restart - it should be obvious the machine is showing
the
boot menu because it will sit there for 30 seconds, so the place you
need
to enter "vga=ask" is in the prompt displayed at the bottom of the
screen.

Once all this is resolved you can change the timeout back to something
more reasonable but in any event, you only have to press Enter at the
boot screen to make the system start booting immediately.

Thanks - I edited the grub file to say 200 seconds just to give me
some time. Except for the fact that I had to hit the keyboard 'pause'
key real fast in order to halt the flash of the vga=ask response, I am
now able to read same. Of course, without the 'pause' the response is
not readable because Linux boots so fast.
In that response it says many things, including vga=0X314. What does
that mean useful to my problem?
Thanks
