Suse Linux install help needed (plz) ---warning --<Linux newbie>-- warning---

I'm reasonably well versed in Windows speak and after hearing so many
great things about Linux I finally took the plunge. I just installed
Suse Linux 9.0 Pro on an older box (specs below). The install
appeared to go extremely smoothly, but upon first boot something went
woefully wrong. Instead of seeing the promised beautiful KDE desktop
environment, I was slapped with some ugly, horrible FVWM2 desktop
environment. I've verified in Yast Control Center that KDE is set as
my default desktop, but I'm still stuck in FVWM2. Can anyone offer
clear step-by-step instructions on how to start KDE (heak, even GNOME
would be nice)?

THANK YOU!
