OK, my copy of SuSE Pro 9.0 doesn't mention anything
about SMB installs. My comments were in earnest (support
the folks who put SuSE together by buying the boxed set).
If your 'Windows share' is using netbuei/netbios it won't
work (must be config'd to use SMB/CIS over TCP/IP).
All you really need are SuSE CD's 1 and 2.
All that aside, the Administration Guide for v9.0 Pro
briefly discusses the 'non-supported' (their words, not
mine) installation from a local server via NFS or FTP,
but provides very little detail. Here's the step-by-step
copied from page 18 of the Admin Guide:
- you must make a SuSE Linux boot disk, then boot from
that disk (see page 20 of the Admin Guide. Note:
as of v9.0 the boot disk may not fit on a floppy, only
on a CD.)
- select 'Manual Installation' from the boot menu
- select 'Kernel modules (hardware drivers)'
- load the IDE, RAID, or SCSI drivers as req'd by your pc
- select 'Load network card modules' and load the needed
network card driver.
- select 'Load file system driver' and load the needed
drivers (e.g. reiserfs).
- select 'Back' then 'Start installation / system'
- select 'Start installation / update'
- select 'Network' then the network protocol (e.g. NFS)
- select the network card to use
- specify the IP address and other network info for this pc
- specify the IP address of the NFS server providing
the installation data
- enter the path of the NFS share (e.g. /suse-share/CD1)
- now 'linuxrc' will load the installation environment from
the network source and start YaST. Proceed with the
installation as described in the User Guide.
