Well, KDE is notoriously slow if you do not have the network connection
setup properly as it relies heavily on the network for interprocess
communication.

So you need to check that the dns and gateway are operating properly. One
thing I have done in the past when faced with problems like this is to
change the network preferences to reduce the timeouts to their minimum,
which you should be able to do from the KDE control center.

If it is not shutting down then press <F2> to drop the splash screen and
get to the text underneath. Where is it hanging?

Not sure about the think pad as I do not use laptops and don't like them.

Try doing a google for suse and thinkpad to see if there are similar
problems reported by others. Also do a google for suse and ati radeon for
the same purpose. I can't help you with this card as I use NVidia.

Another remote possibility is acpi. Do you have it turned on in your
kernel parameters? If so try turning it off and if not then try turning
it on.

Check your X log as well as your normal system logs to find any errors,
which you should post to the ng after removing any personal or private
information that might be in there.

Good-luck.
