eth0 and "default route"?

My sysadmin has given me an IP address, a netmask and a "default
route." The IP and NM I know go in /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth0,
but where does the "default route" address go and what is it??

Additionally, if no broadcast IP is provided, should that just be .255
as the last octet of my IP?

Thanks all.
