WOW! This is the best eye candy I've seen yet for KDE! I'm running the stock
SuSE Window decorations with Thin Keramik style. I turned on all the
goodies I could. I'm absolutely impressed with KDE 3.2.
I love the new menu. It looks better, and is better organized. However, when
is SuSE going to provide us with icons for everything that shows up in
there? I've used other distros that didn't fill the menu full of plain
document icons.
Installation was simpler and quicker than before. It still doesn't get my
Samsung SyncMaster 955DF monitor right, wanting to setup for SyncMaster 4S
instead. No problem...just select the right monitor from the list.
My sound had a problem at first. When KDE started, it would get a high
pitched constant whine. I played around with it and got it to go away, but
it no longer plays the opening music when it starts KDE. I'm working on
that.
My mouse wheel was working correctly, but now it stopped somehow. I have to
investigate and fix.
I'm really uneasy with the increasing migration to a more Windows look and
feel. KDE now goes to b/w when choosing to logout like XP and the SuSE
Hardware Tool (SuSE Plugger) opens up to a Device Manager! What the? It
even gives me a list of unknowns is somehow knows what they are, but no way
to configure them.
I always seem to have to upgrade to the genuine Crystal icons because SuSE
has missing icons and just plain ugly ones, like the XMMS icon. Why?
This is the first time I've ever used apt to upgrade my entire system, since
it's the first time I've installed it on a clean system. It went perfectly
smooth, with the exception of reinstalling the nVidia driver. X was
upgraded and, therefore, the nVidia driver needed reinstalled. Once that
was handled, it returned to blissful computing. Only a single package got
held back during the upgrade.
I like the artwork at the top of the YaST windows a lot better in 9.0. This
art, though Crystal-like (which I like), is a little to overbearing. It
needs some work.
I notice that boot times have shrunk. My system is usable much sooner than
it was. Also, everything seems a bit snappier. I like that...
I give this upgrade a 9.5 out of 10. It's still a little rough around the
edges, but I can't even think of using any other distro. Hell, my Windows
computer is going to get even less use than it currently does...
-- The manual said to install Windows 2000 or better... So I installed SuSE 9.1!
