YOU (YaST Online Update): gtk2-engines
Download and install:
firefox-0.8-i686-pc-linux-gnu-ctl-svg-gtk2-xft.tar.gz
Mozilla 1.7RC1 (I didn't write down the name of the tar ball;
it's the official Mozilla build)
  /usr/local/firefox/
  /usr/local/mozilla/
Both work fine; download a few extensions for Firefox.
Firefox looks particularly pretty, I thought.

02 May
Firefox: cannot print; something about 'no XPSERVERLIST'
This business of xprint seems complicated; scrub out this build.

03 May
YOU: the Linux Kernel - security fix.
Reboot
download and install:
thunderbird-0.6-i686--linux-gtk2+xft.tar.gz
rm -r ~/.thunderbird/ and /usr/local/thunderbird
   (after reading a warning)
re-install Thunderbird; OK, works.

04 May
rm -r ~/.phoenix/ and /usr/local/firefox/
download and install:
firefox-0.8-i686-linux-gtk2+xft.tar.gz
(the official Mozilla Royal Oak build)
Firefox freezes.
delete ~/.phoenix/ and /usr/local/firefox/
download and install:
firefox-0.8-i686-pc-linux-gnu-tar.gz
still as 'root', just fire up Firefox and immediately close it.
logout as 'root'.
launch Firefox: OK.
The bookmark feature does not work:
    cannot bookmark a page.
    cannot create a new folder.
cannot even use the built-in bookmarks.
just says 'Done', which is a lie.
now on launch, freezes up.
Both official builds do not work.
try the fanciest build again: firefox...ctl-svg-gtk2-xft.tar.gz
This build used to work (before the kernel security update?).
the same bookmark problem; and after a second or third launch,
the ice age returns; Alt-F2 >> xkill.

07 May
install Mozilla 1.4 from SuSE 9.0 CD
    /opt/mozilla
fire up Mozilla and close immediately.
YOU (YaST Online Update):
the latest and greatest (and stable and usable) Mozilla!
Not the latest, not the greatest, but only version 1.4.2. Arrgh!
works fine.
delete ~/.phoenix/ and /usr/local/firefox/
download from rpm.pbone.net:
MozillaFirefox-0.8-33-i586.rpm (for SuSE 9.0)
Start Firefox; OK.
Get an extension 'xkiosk'; installed in ~/Downloads.

08 May
After a few cycle of launch/extension/close,
'xkiosk' is properly installed.
'diggler' extension; unsuccessful,
although the computer tells me it is successfully installed.
'ImageZoomer' extension: OK.

NOTE: I AM NOT SEEKING HELP HERE.
This is just an account of my trial and tribulation with Firefox 0.8
on SuSE 9.0, in the hope that, if other users have a similar problems,
some experts may find this account useful in helping these people.
    For now, I am happy with Firefox 0.8 from "rpm.pbone.net" (thanks);
and I'll be moving onto 9.1 pretty soon. I have been using the newest
builds of Firebird, Mozilla, Thunderbird, and even Netscape on SuSE Linux
8.1 and 9.0. This is the first time I've had any trouble.
