I installed suse 8.1 on a Packard Bell Easy one silver 1.5 year ago (I
just switched to suse 9.1 on the same machine). It was a cheap machine
I bought in a mega store. And great surprise! I didn't need to tweak
anything :-).
I had no problem with SUSE 8.1 on this machine except:
- USB stuffs (like mass storage USB device: LaCie 20 GB HD USB, it
has never worked). But it was more a kernel problem than a distro
problem AFAIK. Somebody adviced me to modify the kernel but
considering that this kernel was already modified by SUSE, I preferred
not to create new problems, this machine is used for my job.
- there was no detection for battery life monitor. But the hardware
detection works great so there isn't real need for it.
- And some problems with 3D video drivers (the video card is a S3, not
the best choice for this kind of thing). Quake didn't run, but I don't
play with video game so I didn't bother.
If you plan to update your system (IMHO SUSE 9.1 with kernel 6 is
worth the update price/time). It worked perfectly (but keep backup
ready anyway):
- USB Mass storage works (quite unstable but at least I can access the
LaCie HD)
- 3D works
- My HP PSC 2110 (printer/copier/scanner) works great.
