Hi everybody,
I used Linux years ago but have recently been forced to use Windows
heavily for work-related reasons. I now have some time to switch back
and am trying to install SuSE Linux Personal 9.1 on my home computers.
I have one very old computer that's currently set up to dual-boot Red
Hat 5.1 (I know, I know, my apologies) and Windows 98 using LILO. I
need to keep Windows on the computer for a few key applications, so I
can't take the easy way out and reformat the whole drive. I have a
10GB hard disk partitioned into a few Windows partitions and a whole
bunch of Linux ones, including a 470MB (?) root. When I boot from the
CD, I get an error message saying that the computer does not have
enough RAM (it has 64MB) to run graphical YaST, so text-only YaST
starts. I then get an error message in the YaST configuration log
under the "Software" section along the lines of "Not enough disk
space, even for a minimal installation. *ERROR: No Proposal". I have
5GB worth of Linux partitions that I'm willing to reformat, but when I
try to tell YaST that it can have them, it keeps telling me that it
won't install unless I reformat my primary Windows partition. This
doesn't make any sense to me--I figure that if Red Hat is currently
dual booting, SuSE should be able to too.
I tried contacting technical support, but I keep getting a run-around
from some **outsourced** guy who sounds like he just wants to email me
pages from a tech support book (if you're thinking about paying for
SuSE because you think a retail version will give you good technical
support or a better overall experience, you might want to reconsider).
Does anyone have any suggestions about how I could make this work?
Thanks in advance. For what it's worth, I have searched back posts in
this group, but the recent thread about the guy who was dual booting
XP and Red Hat 9 doesn't help much.
