Thanks for the hints, anc - I'll check all of these things when I get
home tonight. The printer will print without CUPS, as when I use the
"Test Connection" option in Yast's Printers module, I will get a "Hello
world" line printed. That's about as far as I have got so far in the
printing stakes, though...
I am beginning to really wonder whether this may be a CUPS problem;
normally I can connect to the printer via the localhost:631 web
interface and CUPS reports printing jobs are all OK. When I then look at
the /var/.../cups/error.log, I always the the message "media tray empty".
I have searched Google for that phrase and it seems to be a known CUPS
bug. Alas, the one workaround I have found so far on a German group
suggested an edit of the cups.c file, which related to 2.4.x kernels.
While this seemed to have fixed the problem for the people on that
newsgroup, it has not done me much good. :-(
I have downloaded the latest version of CUPS rpms, and tried those; no
good. I tried to run with the CUPS rpms from my SuSE 9.0 CDs; still no
go. I have also tried to use lpr as a spooler in Yast instead of CUPS;
with no luck.
As far as what module was used in SuSE 9.0, I confess I am not sure. I
simply selected the default values suggested by Yast during the initial
installation and all worked without a glitch, so I never looked "under
the bonnet" so to speak.
Anyway; will battle on tonight some more with your input.
Thank you.
