Try turning on sysrq.
At least then you can attempt to escape X without rebooting.
alt-sysrq-<letter>, pressing z lists the possible options.
Useful ones will terminate all processes except init (causing respawning
ones to... respawn), sync the disks, remount disks read-only, hard reboot.
(sssub us a common one, ensure all disks are properly synced, unmounted and
then hard boot, stops problems with fsck)
Unless of course, it is a total lockup. It might be the X driver though, if
you have nvidia's...
