USB problems after update on Suse 9.1

I installed 9.1 personal on my laptop (Dell P-4 512MB USB2 Radeon
Mobility 32MB 802.11B/G). No problems on the install, all hardware
(except broadcom wireless) worked. I'm learning linux but 9.1 worked
so well that I got sloppy and did an update without paying any
attention to what was happening (WinUserMode = On). Update went
normal, restart with dead keyboard. &^%$!. Shoulda paid attention.
Rebooted with failsafe option, logged in as root and ran yast, checked
keyboard options, etc. I don't think I changed anything but on restart
the keyboard started working again. I am using a usb logitech optical
mouse, it is still working fine (soon to change). Installed linuxant
wireless module without any problems, wireless begins working.
Shutdown and come back later, mouse is dead and discover all usb ports
are dead.

Touchpad sucks, but I visit suse website since help and print manual
don't help. No joy there or googling for a clue. A day later, the
obvious strikes: boot on live cd, poke around to see what is
supporting the usb mouse. I found a lot of stuff that seemed important
but in the end (after trial and errors it is working) the relevant
stuff is/was:
1> modprobe uhci-hcd (makes mouse work)
2> modprobe ehci-hcd (makes flashdrive work)
Gonna get old typing su root and entering modprobes every boot, flail
about and finally dig into yast to system editor - system - kernel -
modules loaded on boot and add the following: "uhci-hcd ehci-hcd".

Works! WooHoo, I'm the man! Fixed it on my own (okay I cheated a
little with the live CD trick). After all the babble, here is the
question. What did I do wrong and what can I do better? I feel like I
have "patched" my system into working and not solved the problem. I
get a lot of messages now during boot sequence about usb hub discovery
and configuration. No errors, just a lot of info to say usb is working
and there is a mouse plugged in.

Linux skills not growing as fast as I'd like but it sure is cool. I
liked Fedora but got tired of wrestling windows network connectivity.
Love Gnome but suse doesn't seem to be optimized for gnome users. Suse
9.1 personal is really stripped down, where is all the extras? On the
other hand, it produces a very clean menu structure (like gnome) and
has the essentials. Maybe a lot closer to breaking ties with windows
for good. Thanks for any pointers to head the terminally slow towards
a better fix.
