Sorry but that is as far as I go with the ATI cards, never had to
configure one myself, hopefully someone may jump in here, or if you
look back over the last few weeks on this group there should be a
couple of posts that help.
Are there any errors shown when you try to install the ATI driver?
Can you have a look at the log files in /var/log/ the one that might be
most help is the XFree86.0.log this might show where the ATI is
stopping, you can cut and paste it here ( but not all just the bits
which start with (WW)

When at the desk-top goto the menus and look for Multimedia>Volume
control>Alsamixergui use this to get the sound to as you want, there
are loads of sliders for each aspect of the soundcard, when you get it
just right go to Control Centre>Sound & Multimedia>Mixer and save the
volumes as default making sure that "Load on start" is checked that
should sort out the sound for you.
You might find that the AC97 slider needs to be put right down to get
the tinniness or screeching to go away it did on mine.
