Post script, after a few weeks: still a newbie, but after trying a
number of things, (mostly 9.0) with a lot of help from this group, I
conclude that the linux pc will appear as an icon etc in Local Network
(suse desktop) only if a fixed IP is used for the linux pc. Nothing I
tried using dhcp in the linux pc or the windowbox (workgroup) network
was fully successful for the linux pc in my case, although it was easy
to see the windowbox shares on the linux pc.
