Hello!
I've just recently upgraded from SuSE 9.0 to 9.1. I upgraded because my
SATA hard drive didn't get along very well SuSE 9. I must say that on the
whole, I'm very impressed with 9.1, with two drawbacks. My printer and
scanner worked under 9.0; they do not under 9.1.
My scanner is a Microtek SlimScan C3 connected via the parallel port. Two
modules need to be loaded to make it work (ppscsi and onscsi). These were
not included with 9.1. I downloaded a patch from
http://penguin-breeder.org/kernel/#ppscsi and it compiled without errors.
However, I can't get the scanner to work. Color mode returns a completely
black scan and locks the scanner up. Grayscale returns a very distorted
image. The system log tells me "...onscsi.0: WARNING: data read
overran by...". Unfortunately, the ppscsi project is no longer maintained. I
may have to retire it to the kids computer and invest in a new scanner.
The printer is an Epson Stylus Photo R300. I originally (with SuSE 9.0) used
the driver downloaded from Epson. It worked fine after I finally got it to
compile. Under 9.1, it compiles just fine (no errors).
However, I can't get a connection to the printer. I tried to copy the
binaries from my 9.0 installation (The Epson driver uses a proprietary
engine). This allowed me to communicate with the printer (I can check ink
levels). Print jobs go to null. Nothing comes out of the printer. I tried
setting it up under Yast using the Gnome print driver. The results were
the same (nothing printed).
The scanner would be nice to have working, but I do understand that
parallel port devices are obsolete and most people probably figure it's
easier to upgrade the hardware than the software.
I would very much like to get the printer working. If anyone has any
ideas, please reply.
Thanks in advance!
Chris Hogan
