My idea (since I too could not get the Cisco client to compile) was to
use vpnc (http://www.unix-ag.uni-kl.de/~massar/vpnc), which works
perfectly for me. In fact I like it better as it provides me with a
hook by which to modify the resolv.conf after connection and then to
later restore it.
