Well, at least in my case - and that's the important one, right? :-)
As stated in a couple of previous threads on this group, I had severe
problems trying to get my Epson Stylus C40UX printer to work in SuSE 9.1
Pro. An annoying issue, as this printer is supposedly fully supported
and has, after all, worked fine in SuSE 9.0 on the same machine. I asked
for help here and such was offered, as always (thanks, guys!), but,
alas, none of the suggestions worked.
This is a standalone home machine, and the printer connects via a
standard USB port. When installing the printer, Yast would find it
without a problem; it would install the appropriate CUPS rpms and I
would be able to "test connection" whereby the message "Hello world"
would be printed. Alas, that was as far as I could get.
/var/logs/cups/error_logs would invariably show the message "Media tray
empty!" and I could get no printing out of any application.
Just as I was ready to give up and go buy a new printer, I noticed in
the error logs something about "ESP Ghostprint" perhaps not being
installed. I searched Google for it and found the latest rpms at
<http://tinyurl.com/353wx>
I downloaded both the rpm files there, then uninstalled everything to do
with cups and ghostscript that came on the SuSE CDs. There were some
dependencies there, so I just told Yast to ignore those for the time being.
I then installed the *old* cups-related rpm files from my SuSE 9.0 Pro
CDs and proceeded to install the downloaded ghostscript files, using
"rpm -Uvh ghostscript*.rpm --no deps" command. I had to use the
"--nodeps" flag, as there was supposedly an unsatisfied dependency there
to do with a perl script file called getops.pl. The file exists in
/usr/lib/perl5/5.8.3/, but for some reason the rpm repository could not
see it. Don't ask me why...this is still shown as a failed dependency
for ESP Ghostscript 7.07.1-0
when I try to run Synaptic (although not in Yast!), so if anyone can
tell me how I can get the rpm repository (or Synaptic) to see this file,
please do!
Then I fired up Yast and installed my printer & the CUPS server. Yast
asked to upgrade some of the CUPS packages, which I let it do. Once that
was done, I started Konqueror and went to
<http://localhost:631> - the CUPS admin. For some reason, to use the web
interface you have to set a password for the root user specifically for
CUPS administration, using the command line interface. Again - don't ask
me why, but here are the commands:
# lppasswd -g sys -a root
then state new password.
Using the web interface, I then selected my printer model again and
experimented with the driver files there. The first one was promising -
it started printing, but resulted in a black page. The second one hit
the jackpot! Even the "Media tray empty" message is gone and now it just
says "Idle, accepting jobs".
So that's it; I'm happy, I have finally got everything I need to work in
this version of SuSE and I love it! I do hope this may help save some
aggravation to others confronted with the same issue!
Cheers,
John
