sounds very reminiscent of my recent problems, (& from others).

Have a look at the thread here with subject:
'newb install new samba?'

The happy ending as stated was (yesterday) I did an online update after
choosing the suse company server in the update source server list. Or at
least do a final update from that server. (The samba update did not
appear earlier the same day on another german mirror).
