Hi, I'm working with SuSE for several years. I tried several other
distributions (not Mandrake) but I'll stick with SuSE for a long time. I
could give a long story what and why SuSE is (possibly) the best
distribution, but that's not where you're asking for, is it? So let's
turn to your questions.
First, SuSE's iso is really incomparable to the real distribution, it is
a lot better and has a huge collection of ready to install applications.
Possibly the best book (or better saying 2 books) are comming with a
official distribution package. If you buy a book in the bookstore, it
will cost you as much as the hole SuSE package. Only the books are
already worth the price to pay.
There might be a way to get softcopies of those books for free, which
I'll tell you later.
The screen resolution you can set depends on 2 things:
1. The X program (comparable to - in Windows terms: graphics driver) you
must use. This depends on you graphics hardware.
2. Configuration file /etc/XF86Config. Believe me, if your X program
knows about your grahics card, it can set any resolution of your
graphics card you can imagine.
What you should realise is that YAST simply automates standard
configuration. This is realy convinient once you already know about
these standard (but sometimes hard) configuraion methods. However it can
disturb less experirienced users. In non-standard configuration
situations YAST (or one of its subprograms) might not able to handle the
case. A good example of such case is the mounting of file systems
(/etc/fstab). In cases of complex configuration (partitions, nfs,
special file systems) you'd better configuring the file systems table
manually by editing fstab. So you have to fall back on manual
configuration. But, don't worry it might take some time to spit through
man pages and documentation, i is not that hard eather.
To setup you card resolution you have to edit XF86Config. Look for
display sections, modelines and virtual screen settings. But first take
a look to the manpages of X. Here is a easy way to quickly find
documentation.
> locate X | grep -E 'doc|man' | less
Take some time for this, particulairly take care about mode lines
Another handy tool is xvidtune. This tool lets you adjust and fine tune
modelines to exactly match your monitor/graphics card.
If you are realy in for cheap distributions of SuSE, look for mirrors of
ftp.suse.com. I'm not on Linux (rarely occasion) now. But remind me to
send you a full ftp list (in this newsgroup). I can also look for the
softcopies of the SuSE books and point you to the rpm file (containing
these softcopies) that you should download.
Please, onestly tell what you think about my reply. I like to know if it
helped you or not.
If there is interesting stuff to tell about Mandrake, please feel free
to do so.
Regars....
