There should also be FHS standard documentation with the system? On my
SuSE 8.2 system I have:

Name : fhs Relocations: (not relocateable)
Version : 2.2 Vendor: SuSE Linux AG, Nuernberg, Germany
Release : 71 Build Date: Mon 17 Mar 2003 01:59:12 PM NST
Install date: Tue 20 Apr 2004 04:55:26 PM NDT Build Host: Baire.suse.de
Group : Documentation/Other Source RPM: fhs-2.2-71.src.rpm
Size : 521609 License: Other License(s), see package
Packager : http://www.suse.de/feedback
Summary : Filesystem Hierarchy Standard
Description :
This standard consists of a set of requirements and
guidelines for file and directory placement under UNIX-like
operating systems. The guidelines are intended to support
interoperability of applications, system administration tools,
development tools, and scripts as well as greater uniformity
of documentation for these systems.

I think it is more general than just Linux, but that's a good thing.
