Speed of starting KDE apps

I do not use KDE as my desktop. From time to time, however, I need to
run KDE apps. I am concerned about the length of time they take to start up.

Let's take kreversi as an example. It's a simple little puzzle game;
when it starts up, all it should need to do is load a few files, open a
window and draw a few things in it. Should take less than a second, right?

For some unfathomable reason, this takes 11 seconds. After 7 seconds, I
get the message "kbuildsycoca running..." and a further four seconds
after that the window eventually appears.

What's going on here? This is a fast workstation with a gig of RAM and
no significant workload. I'm keen to know what I can do to improve this
situation.
