Well, finally specced and bought my AMD64 machine (AMD64 3500+ 939, Asus A8V
Deluxe mobo, 1Gb RAM, 2x160Gb SATA in removable trays (1 for linux, 1 for
Windows) and PNY FX5900XT graphics).
I installed Windows XP first, and it was very frustrating, somewhere around
6 hours to get XP on and patced - lots of problems with unknown devices,
wouldn´t even recognise the SATA controller to install onto a partition, a
quick trip back to the computer store to buy a floppy drive as Win XP would
only load additional drivers from floppy.
Then it didn´t recognise the network adapter (Marvel Yukon Gbit on Mobo), or
the graphics card or the sound card, had to source through 5 supplied CD´s
to get everything running. Once it installed, it was fast.
At around 9 this morning, I installed SuSE 9.1 64-bit on the same machine,
it recognised all the hardware and just installed. It isn´t even 10 and
´ve played a game of Breakout on it - just to test the graphics and sound
you understand ;-)
Apart from loading the nVidia closed source drivers to get 3D support, every
worked straight off the DVD.
Bill Gates comments on installing Linux in Sydney earlier this week were
sort of correct, Windows is *nothing* like SuSE Linux to install!
