Hi,

I'm getting really crazy here. I've setup a Pentium II for friend of mine,
so she will not have any viruses anymore. I've installed SuSE 9.1 (using
kernel 2.6.4) and KDE 3.2 and all works fine, except modems. Here original
internal winmodem did not work, so we we're able to find a E-Tech E56RVP+
external modem.

What I understand is that you only have to connect to COM1 (ttyS0),
link /dev/ttyS0 to /dev/modem and running wvdial should start the
dialprocess. Same can be done with SuSE's Yast.

I checked the /etc/wvdial.conf file and all looks fine. Device is set
to /dev/modem. When running wvdial I receive the following error:

/dev/modem: Input/output error

I changed to /dev/ttyS1 and directly to /dev/ttyS0 in /etc/wvdial.conf, but
without results. There is a 'device' in /dev/modems, called mwave, but
using this one gives a 'unknown device' error.

The only thing I can come up with are the IRC settinhs in the BIOS. For the
serial devices they are set to auto. If this is the case, what must be the
right values?

I'm really stuck here. She don't have the money for broadband, and her PC is
now in 'reparation' for almost 2 months. I want to avoid to install
windows, because I promised here Linux and my own reputation is at risk
here ;-).

Please help?

Thanks in advance,

Jeroen
