Ironic really, I have always used lilo, but found I had to switch to grub to
clear this problem (happened on both i386 and x86_64 versions). For some
reason the root partition in the boot command was set to 302, and as there
was no partition 302 it failed to boot.
It is possible to get around this by specifying the root partition at the
boot prompt, e.g root=/dev/hda2 but that is a far from ideal solution.
[dmesg after this shows:
Bootdata ok (command line is auto BOOT_IMAGE=Linux root=302 console=tty0
desktop resume=/dev/hdc1 showopts root=/dev/hda2)]
I am at a loss as to where the information setting the root partition to the
wrong place first of all is coming from.
