The main advantage of having the "drivers" on your machine locally and
installing by hand is incase you do a kernel update, after an update
your machine will not boot back into the GUI unless you re-install the
nvidias ( not 100% true, it is possible to edit the XF86config and
change the "nvidia" to "nv" and then X will start ) then you will still
have to d/load the nvidia`s again and install, then re-edit the the
config file again to load the nvidia`s and restart the gui.
This method is ok but consumes time, if you have the nvidias on your
machine then it is just a matter of running one command, no editing of
files is needed and no reboot, then issuing init 5 to get back to full
operation.
or you could run Yast from the commandline and get the nvidia`s that way
but if you are on a slow connection you will be wasting time again.
