It's a Catch-22 situation; the swap is required before the YaST can start
doing anything useful (in particular, the partitioning tool). ISTR it has
an error like "Not enough memory--please specify a swap area to continue"
(or something like that), according to the OP.

I see this often with SuSE installs on low(er) RAM machines. But since it
isn't suprising to me, I know where an old swap partition is found or can
set one up easily beforehand with a rescue utility (tomsrtbt, etc.). Some
of these installs had enough RAM for a text install--not enough for using
the GUI install default, however (YMMV).

My suggestions to the OP was to first try a text install. Failing that, I
suggested booting a rescue mode (SuSE of course furnishes one) and trying
to manually setup swap with something like fdisk/mkswap (etc.).

(Even then, low RAM thrashing in any very recent GUI SuSE install is bad)
